Ponnam Prabhakar attends Jyotiba Phule bicentenary event in Lucknow

Hyderabad: Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar attended a Congress OBC Cell programme in Lucknow on the occasion of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule’s 200th birth anniversary and said the Telangana government was giving priority to backward classes and weaker sections. At the Ponnam Prabhakar Lucknow event, Congress leaders also discussed the caste census conducted in Telangana and the State government’s social justice measures.

The event was held at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow under the aegis of the Congress OBC department. On the occasion of the bicentenary celebrations of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Ponnam Prabhakar paid tribute to Phule’s portrait at the venue.

Ponnam Prabhakar Lucknow event highlights caste census

AICC OBC Cell leaders felicitated Ponnam Prabhakar for the Telangana government’s caste census and for measures taken for the welfare and development of weaker sections, according to the organisers. During the meeting, the Minister said the Praja Palana government in Telangana was giving importance to backward classes and weaker sections.

He said the meeting discussed the caste census undertaken by the Telangana government as part of its commitment to social justice. He also stated that the Assembly had passed a resolution to implement 42 per cent reservations in politics, education and jobs.

Ponnam Prabhakar Lucknow event raises OBC reservation demand

At the programme, leaders demanded implementation of reservation for OBC women within the women’s reservation framework brought by the Centre. They also said the Congress organised the conference to strengthen its OBC Cell in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the organisers, the event aimed to question the Central government on social justice issues, especially over the share for OBCs in the women’s reservation Bill. Congress leaders also demanded that the Centre conduct a caste census across the country on the lines of Telangana.

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Uttar Pradesh PCC chief Ajay Rai were among the senior leaders who attended the programme along with Ponnam Prabhakar.
