Ponguleti pushes for TGSDMA revamp as national disaster model

Hyderabad: Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has directed officials to transform the Telangana State Disaster Management Authority (TGSDMA) into a national-level standard for disaster management.

He said the state administration is working to build TGSDMA’s ability to handle natural calamities more effectively and minimise casualties and property loss.

As part of these efforts, the government intends to restructure TGSDMA. The Chief Minister will act as Chairperson, supported by Ministers handling Revenue, Home, Finance, Medical and Health, Major Irrigation, Roads and Buildings, and Panchayati Raj and Rural Development. The Chief Secretary will function as Member Convener, with the Special Chief Secretary for Revenue participating as a special invitee.

TGSDMA revamp

Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao and Special Principal Secretary for Disaster Management, Arvind Kumar, on Wednesday held a meeting at the Secretariat with district Collectors and senior officials to review flood control strategies in the Godavari and Krishna basins.

The Minister underlined the need for a robust system to communicate alerts about sudden floods and rainfall changes linked to climate shifts. He called for scientific data analysis in cooperation with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and said the data should be available round-the-clock. He noted that the existing information network must be upgraded.

He further stated that special nodal officers will be appointed for various departments irrigation, electricity, health, agriculture, police, and transport to coordinate flood and rain-related responses at the state level.
