Hyderabad: A routine government programme in Telangana took a deeply emotional turn on Tuesday when Congress MLA Yashaswini Reddy broke down in tears while handing over housing approval documents under the revived Indiramma scheme.
The touching moment unfolded in Mahabubabad district’s Peddavangara mandal, where the Palakurthi legislator was attending a distribution drive at a local Rythu Vedika centre. As she began presenting the allotment papers to eligible beneficiaries, the weight of the occasion visibly moved her to tears. Women gathered at the event were quick to console the young MLA, gently urging her to hold back her emotions with cries of “ooruko akka.”
The Indiramma housing scheme, reintroduced by the Congress government as a symbol of dignity and self-respect for the underprivileged, aims to provide structured financial assistance for the construction of homes. The housing scheme rolls out in four stages, offering a total grant of ₹5 lakh per family.
As per the updated guidelines, beneficiaries must build homes ranging from 400 to 600 square feet. The funding is disbursed in phases ₹1 lakh is released after the foundation is completed, another ₹1 lakh once the walls go up, ₹2 lakh upon finishing the slab, and the final ₹1 lakh after full completion of the house. All payments are directly credited to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts through a green channel.
The incident with Yashaswini Reddy has since gone viral online, drawing attention not only to her emotional commitment but also to the larger symbolic value of the scheme for the state’s economically disadvantaged.
Congress leaders have repeatedly described the scheme as more than a welfare promise calling it a declaration of self-worth for the poor. And on this day, amidst paperwork and official speeches, that message was perhaps felt most powerfully in the tearful silence of a young MLA overwhelmed by the significance of what she was handing over.
