Hyderabad: The Excise Department in Medchal–Malkajgiri district is conducting the liquor shop license lottery today, October 27. District Collector Mikkilineni Manu Choudhary is leading the draw to allot shops for the 2024–25 license period.
Liquor shop lottery underway in Medchal–Malkajgiri
The draw began at 11 a.m. at Sri Pallavi Convention in Peerzadiguda. Officials organised the lottery according to the serial numbers listed in the district gazette. Only registered applicants joined the process, and authorities instructed them to reach the venue by 9 a.m. The Excise Department also barred mobile phones inside the hall to maintain order and transparency.
Over 11,000 applicants compete for 206 liquor outlets
Authorities divided the district into two units — Medchal and Malkajgiri. The Medchal unit recorded 5,168 applications for 118 shops, while the Malkajgiri unit received 6,063 for 88 outlets. In total, 11,231 people applied for 206 liquor shops. Interestingly, Malkajgiri, despite having fewer outlets, attracted more applicants than Medchal. Each outlet in Malkajgiri drew an average of 69 applications, while each in Medchal saw around 44.
Officials ensure fairness and transparency in the draw
Excise officials said the department aims to ensure complete fairness in the lottery process. They are monitoring every stage of the draw and addressing queries from applicants on the spot. Moreover, they urged participants to cooperate so that the proceedings continue smoothly without disruption.
