Hyderabad: Residents of Vatour village in Medak district barred several siblings from attending their father’s funeral after they allegedly failed to care for him in old age.
According to locals, Devayya of Vatour village had five married children. His wife Narsamma died eight years ago following illness, leaving him to live alone.
Devayya broke his leg in an accident a few months ago, but none of his sons or daughters stepped in to help. Only his youngest son Srinivas visited him, but he too died a short while later.
Devayya’s health worsened and he passed away on Friday night. When news of his death reached his children, they arrived for the funeral. However, villagers, angry over their indifference, stopped them from joining the last rites.
The children were forced to watch the funeral from a distance and then leave. The villagers oversaw the funeral, which was performed under the supervision of Devayya’s grandson, who had cared for him until the end.
The incident raised concerns over growing neglect of elderly parents in rural communities.
