Heavy rain cuts off roads in Medak, Sangareddy; Singur reservoir receives 40,000 cusecs inflow

Hyderabad: Heavy overnight rains battered the erstwhile Medak district, cutting off road connectivity in several parts of Medak and Sangareddy as streams overflowed and inundated low-level bridges. By Wednesday morning, multiple stretches had been washed away, leaving villages isolated and traffic suspended.

In Ramayampet mandal, the road linking Lakshmapur to Lakshmapur railway station was completely swept away after floodwaters surged into the stream. Similar scenes were reported across other mandals where rivulets swelled to full capacity, eroding road links and halting vehicular movement.

Singur reservoir receives heavy inflows

The Singur reservoir received massive inflows of nearly 40,000 cusecs from upstream at midnight. Irrigation authorities lifted two crest gates and released 22,500 cusecs downstream, in addition to discharges through the power plant. Officials said reservoir levels were being closely monitored as inflows continued.

Rainfall was intense across Medak district. Pedda Shankarampet recorded 204 mm, Tekmal 200 mm, and Ramayampet 180 mm. Sangareddy district recorded 176 mm in the past 24 hours till 8.30 am on Wednesday. Medak district’s average rainfall stood at 116 mm, while Sangareddy and Siddipet recorded 65 mm and 36 mm respectively.

Normal life hit, crops submerged

Low-lying areas in multiple mandals were inundated, forcing residents indoors. Standing crops were submerged under floodwaters, raising concerns of damage to agriculture. Officials said damage assessments would be taken up once the rains subside.

Vinayaka Chavithi celebrations took a hit this year, with continuous rain disrupting puja arrangements and keeping crowds away from Ganesh pandals. The IMD’s forecast of more heavy rain has prompted district authorities to stay on high alert. Officials have also urge people to steer clear of culverts and waterlogged roads to avoid accidents.
