Maharashtra newborn declared dead revives before burial, probe ordered

Hyderabad: In a startling case of medical negligence, a newborn girl declared dead at a government hospital in Maharashtra’s Beed district was found alive 12 hours later—moments before burial preparations.

The incident occurred at Swami Ramanand Teerth Government Hospital, where a woman named Balika Jhughe gave birth on the night of July 7. The hospital informed the family that the newborn had died soon after delivery and kept the body for several hours before releasing it for the funeral.

But just as relatives began the final rites and gently unwrapped the cloth to see the baby’s face one last time, they were shocked to see her move, clear signs that she was still alive.

Realising the child was alive, the family rushed her to the Ambajogai government hospital, where her condition is now reported stable.

The infant’s mother accused hospital staff of negligence, stating that she had observed movement even earlier and alerted a nurse, who allegedly ignored her concerns.

The hospital administration has confirmed receiving a formal complaint and has set up a committee to investigate the incident. Officials stated that strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
