Hyderabad: Minister for Forests and Environment Konda Surekha on Tuesday launched the poster for the National Student Paryavaran Competition 2025 (NSPC), kicking off a 50-day environmental awareness campaign in Telangana.
The launch took place at her residence in Hyderabad. The campaign will involve school students across the state in a series of activities focused on environmental protection.
As part of the programme, students will begin by planting a tree each and committing to its care. They will tie a rakhi around the plant in a symbolic gesture under the ‘Vriksha Rakshabandhan’ initiative. Trees may be planted in memory of elders or national figures.
The campaign will also train students in basic waste segregation—separating wet, dry, plastic, and e-waste both at school and at home. Other components include Zero Waste Lunches, compost pit creation, and classroom ‘Swachhata Corners’.
Plastic reduction and recycling efforts are part of the programme. Students will be encouraged to reuse old materials and participate in school-based Recycle Stores and Swap Shops.
Water conservation will be another key focus. Students will take pledges, fix leaking taps, promote drip irrigation, reuse water, and help maintain rainwater harvesting systems. Each child will be assigned responsibility for a single water tap.
Konda Surekha urged students to adopt sustainable habits and take responsibility for trees, water use, and waste disposal. She said these activities would help position Telangana as a leader in environmental education.
