Hyderabad: Telangana Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy on Monday reaffirmed the government’s resolve to complete the long-pending Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) Tunnel-1. He said all technical, financial, and rehabilitation challenges would be addressed without delay.
He visited Mannavaripalli in Achampet mandal, Nagarkurnool district, along with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy. The team launched a heliborne aerial electromagnetic survey to examine subsurface rock structures and water flow patterns up to 1,000 metres deep.
Advanced tech to solve SLBC tunnel bottlenecks
Komatireddy stated that the government is reviving the stalled tunnel project using advanced technology. Acting on the Chief Minister’s instructions, he personally visited the United States to procure a modern tunnel boring machine. This equipment, he said, is vital to overcoming excavation challenges.
He criticised earlier governments for failing to act. “If they hadn’t neglected it, this tunnel would already be serving the people,” he said.
SLBC tunnel to benefit 30 lakh people and 3 lakh acres
According to Komatireddy, the tunnel will deliver drinking water to 30 lakh residents and gravity-fed irrigation to 3 lakh acres. This system will significantly reduce electricity costs for the state. Additionally, the project will contribute to solving Nalgonda’s water crisis and help clean the Musi River.
Calling SLBC one of the world’s largest irrigation tunnels, he said the government remains committed to completing it. “We’ll enable seamless funding through a green channel, finish resettlement packages by December 31, and offer full assistance to displaced landowners,” he assured.
