Kavitha slams Speaker’s clean chit to Jagtial MLA in defection case

Hyderabad: Jagruthi president and former MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Wednesday criticised Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar for giving a clean chit to Jagtial MLA Sanjay Kumar in the defection case.

Kavitha said the decision amounted to an attack on democratic values. She questioned how the Speaker could ignore what she called clear indicators of defection.

Referring to the MLA’s presence at Gandhi Bhavan, Kavitha said attending Congress party meetings itself proved a change of political allegiance. She asked what further evidence the Speaker required.

She also cited the municipal elections in Jagtial. According to her, the same MLA issued Congress B-forms during the polls, which had sparked widespread controversy.

Defection case decision sparks constitutional questions

Kavitha said the Speaker dismissed the petition by claiming there was no evidence of defection. She questioned whether the Speaker was acting as a constitutional authority or as a Congress leader.

She argued that such actions weakened the sanctity of the Speaker’s office. Kavitha also asked how constitutional values and legislative dignity could be protected if the Speaker acted with political bias.

The Jagruthi president said the Speaker’s role demanded neutrality. She warned that selective decisions in defection cases would erode public trust in democratic institutions.
