Hyderabad: A surge in patients addicted to illicit toddy was reported at Erragadda mental hospital following recent excise raids that shut down local kallu compounds.
With the supply abruptly cut, individuals dependent on adulterated liquor began showing withdrawal symptoms. Family members brought several of them to the Institute of Mental Health for treatment.
Dr. Anita Rayirala, superintendent of the hospital, said 100 outpatients visited the OP block on Wednesday, of whom 30 were toddy addicts.
On Tuesday, 40 such cases were recorded, with three requiring admission and 37 sent home with medication.
The hospital stated that most of Wednesday’s cases were not severe. Patients would undergo further evaluation and be prescribed treatment on Friday.
The crackdown on illegal illicit toddy sales has triggered acute withdrawal crises in several localities, with affected individuals displaying erratic behaviour due to the sudden unavailability.
