Jeevan Reddy resigns from Congress amid defection row

Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader and former minister T. Jeevan Reddy announced his resignation from the party, triggering fresh political ripples in Telangana. The Jeevan Reddy resignation ends a political association spanning nearly four decades.

He said he would formally submit his resignation letter to the AICC and PCC. Meanwhile, he stated that prolonged mental distress over the past 20 months led to his decision. Therefore, he said he could not continue in a place where self-respect was compromised.

Jeevan Reddy resignation highlights defection tensions in Congress

Reddy cited the issue of defections within the party as a key reason for his exit. He said the Congress already holds a clear majority in the Assembly. However, he criticised the induction of MLAs from other parties.

He pointed out that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has taken a stand against defections. In contrast, he said, Telangana leaders acted in the opposite manner. As a result, he expressed strong dissatisfaction with the party’s approach.

He also objected to the inclusion of M.S. Sanjay Kumar, his political rival from Jagtial, into the party. Moreover, he said the leadership took the decision without consulting him. Consequently, he termed the move as humiliating.

Reddy said he would consult party workers before deciding his political future. He added that he does not seek positions and prioritises the dignity of party cadre. Meanwhile, he plans to tour villages and gather feedback before announcing his next course of action.

The Jeevan Reddy resignation sparked intense discussion in the undivided Karimnagar district and across the state Congress. Party leaders are attempting to persuade him to reconsider. However, he appears firm on his decision.
