Hyderabad: An Indiramma house protest in Ellamla village of Jangaon mandal saw a man attempt self-harm on Monday. The incident followed allegations that housing benefits were not being given to eligible poor families.
Villagers had set up a tent outside the gram panchayat office and launched a protest. Their demonstration followed claims that an Indiramma house had been sanctioned to the sarpanch instead of an eligible beneficiary.
Recently, messages circulated in village WhatsApp and social media groups about houses sanctioned under the quotas of an MP, MLA and the Congress party. A list containing beneficiaries’ names was also circulated through these groups.
Birru Raju, who had previously applied for an Indiramma house, reportedly did not find his name on the list. Meanwhile, villagers questioned why the sarpanch had received a house while poor families such as Raju’s had not.
During the protest, Raju reportedly became distressed and poured petrol on himself near the gram panchayat office. Villagers immediately intervened, took the bottle away and moved it aside.

Raju reportedly told villagers that some people had provided incorrect information claiming his son was employed by the government. He expressed distress over the issue and sought action from officials.
