HYDERABAD: An Indian student was tragically shot dead in Canada while waiting at a bus stop, caught in the crossfire between two drivers who opened fire on each other.
The incident occurred in Hamilton, Ontario, where the victim, Harsimrat Randhawa, a student at Mohawk College, was standing at a bus stop reportedly preparing to head to work. According to Canadian police, the fatal shot struck her during an exchange of gunfire between occupants of two vehicles.
Authorities confirmed that the shooting took place around 7:30 p.m. in the Upper James area of Hamilton. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the student with chest injuries. She was immediately rushed to hospital, where she succumbed to her wounds.
Preliminary investigation, including CCTV footage analysis, revealed that individuals in a black vehicle had fired at a white vehicle. A stray bullet from the incident struck Randhawa. One of the bullets also pierced through the window of a nearby residence, though no one inside was injured.
The suspects fled the scene following the shooting. Hamilton Police have registered a case and are actively investigating. A manhunt is currently underway to track down those responsible.
The Consulate General of India in Canada expressed deep sorrow over Harsimrat Randhawa’s death through a social media statement, adding that they are in contact with her family and will provide all necessary support. Condolences were extended to the bereaved family.
