Water Board to penalise illegal motor use on taps from April 15

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has issued a stern warning against the use of motors on domestic water taps. Managing Director Ashok Reddy announced that a penalty of ₹5,000 will be imposed on violators, along with seizure of the motor and disconnection of the water connection.

Reviewing the city’s drinking water supply with officials on Wednesday, Ashok Reddy directed the launch of a special “Water Drive” from April 15. He instructed officers to prepare a focused action plan under the banner “Motor-Free Tap Water” to curb this illegal practice.

The Water Board warned residents that fitting motors to tap lines causes pressure imbalances in the supply system, especially during peak hours. This leads to widespread complaints from other consumers and affects the equitable distribution of water.

To address the issue effectively during the summer months, authorities have been instructed to take proactive measures to ensure uninterrupted supply. The Water Board MD noted that pressure-related complaints have increased, prompting the strict enforcement drive.

As part of the campaign, teams will monitor residential areas and take immediate action against any unauthorised use of motors.

Ashok Reddy appealed to the people of Hyderabad to use water judiciously and restrict its use to essential drinking purposes, urging them to cooperate with the Water Board in maintaining fair access for all.
