Hyderabad: In a continuing crackdown on drunk driving, Hyderabad City Traffic Police presented 105 accused individuals before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Nampally, after counselling them for driving under the influence across Abids, Chikkadpally, and Saifabad traffic police station limits over the past two days.
Of these, 75 persons were fined ₹2,100 each, 12 were fined ₹3,100 each, and one was detained until the court rose and fined ₹3,300. Additionally, 17 offenders were sentenced to short-term imprisonment and fined ₹41,000 collectively. The court imposed a total fine of ₹2,39,000 in these cases.
Traffic Assistant Commissioner of Police S. Mohan Kumar, Central Zone, said these measures aimed not only to punish offenders but also to build public awareness about the grave risks of drunk driving.
Meanwhile, Cyberabad Traffic Police booked 627 motorists for driving under the influence during a special weekend enforcement drive. According to officials, 458 cases involved two-wheeler riders, 116 four-wheeler drivers, 39 three-wheeler operators, and 14 heavy vehicle drivers.
In blood alcohol concentration checks, 548 offenders fell between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml, 48 were between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml, while 31 had highly dangerous levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 500 mg/100 ml.
Cyberabad police reminded citizens that fatal accidents caused by inebriated drivers would invite prosecution under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which stipulates up to 10 years imprisonment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Officials urged the public to comply with traffic rules to protect lives on the road and cooperate in maintaining road safety.
