Hyderabad: Hyderabad heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning disrupted normal life across several parts of the city on Friday evening. The downpour continued for more than an hour, flooding roads and inundating low-lying areas. As drainage systems overflowed, several localities faced waterlogging and severe traffic congestion.
Khairatabad, Panjagutta, Somajiguda, Ameerpet, SR Nagar, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills and Film Nagar were among the worst-affected areas. Large volumes of rainwater accumulated on major roads. Consequently, office-goers returning home and other commuters struggled to move through the flooded stretches.
The evening rush hour added to the disruption. Traffic movement slowed sharply as vehicles struggled to pass through waterlogged roads. In several locations, long queues formed and commuters faced extended delays.
Hyderabad heavy rain paralyses IT corridor routes
The situation was particularly difficult across the IT corridor. Madhapur, Hitech City, KPHB, Mindspace and the IKEA route witnessed long traffic queues stretching for kilometres. Near Madhapur City Wines, the main road was covered by so much rainwater that vehicle movement came to a complete halt.
Traffic congestion also affected the routes from Quthbullapur to Suraram and Shapur to Gajularamaram. Meanwhile, some commuters took shelter beneath Metro pillars to escape the rain. Others remained stranded in traffic for hours.
Uppal, LB Nagar, Manikonda, Raidurg and Rajendranagar also reported similar conditions. Several suburban stretches experienced traffic disruption as the heavy rain affected movement across the city.
However, the rainfall brought some relief from the intense heat and humidity that residents had faced over the previous few days. The downpour eased those conditions even as waterlogging and traffic congestion continued across several areas.
