Hyderabad: The city’s fish markets bustled with life on Sunday as Hyderabadis thronged to stock up on fish for Mrigasira Karte, a traditional day that marks the transition to the monsoon and is widely believed to benefit health when observed with a fish-based meal.
Ramnagar Market is one of the city’s largest fish trading hub, on Sunday it was packed with buyers, as over 150 lorries rolled in from across the state, offloading tonnes of fresh catch. Traders reported that roughly 10,000 kilograms of fish changed hands across Hyderabad on the day, as both individual buyers and restaurant suppliers competed for the best catch.
Varieties like Rohu and Catla were among the top sellers in several neighbourhoods, while Murrel already a premium fish was snapped up by high-end buyers despite its price jumping from Rs 450 to Rs 600 per kilo.
The seasonal belief that fish consumption during this shift in weather helps balance the body’s internal heat seems to have held strong across generations. Many families consider this day an essential part of the monsoon’s cultural rhythm one where tradition, food, and seasonal change intersect in the form of a hearty fish meal.
