HMWSSB MD orders strict treated water quality checks at STPs

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director Ashok Reddy has directed officials to strictly maintain the quality of treated water from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). He also asked them to promote its reuse for non-drinking purposes.

Reddy inspected the Nanakramguda and Khajaguda STPs on Thursday. He reviewed treatment processes, water quality standards, Green Water Tanker filling stations and supply arrangements.

The MD instructed officials to monitor key water quality parameters regularly. These include Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and pH levels. He directed them to upload test results online and said he would not tolerate negligence in maintaining prescribed standards.

He also called for developing Green Water Tanker filling stations as model facilities. They should have improved internal roads, adequate parking space and proper entry and exit arrangements. These changes would ensure smooth tanker movement and faster filling.

Display boards ordered at all STPs

To improve transparency, Reddy directed officials to install electronic display boards at all STPs. The boards will show treated water quality parameters, including BOD, COD, TSS and pH, for public information.

Emphasising water conservation, he said officials should use treated wastewater more for construction, gardening, landscaping and other non-potable needs. This would reduce dependence on drinking water. He asked officials to encourage construction companies, commercial establishments and bulk consumers to shift to treated water wherever possible.

STP CGM Padmaja, GM Subba Rayudu and other officials took part in the inspection.
