High Court issues notice to Danam Nagender over defection plea

Hyderabad: Telangana High Court issued notice to Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender in a defection-related petition and directed him to file a response within four weeks.

The court adjourned further hearing in the case to next month on the 16th. BJP MLA A Maheshwar Reddy filed the petition challenging Nagender’s change of political affiliation.

Danam Nagender faces notice in defection case

The petitioner argued that Khairatabad MLA, elected on a BRS ticket, later joined the Congress, which violated constitutional provisions. He sought immediate disqualification of the MLA.

Earlier, Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar held that Nagender had not defected and continued to remain in the BRS. The petitioner challenged this decision before the High Court.

During the hearing, Advocate General Sudarshan Reddy, appearing for the Speaker, cited previous Supreme Court rulings on defection matters. However, the petitioner’s counsel argued that contesting as a Congress candidate for Parliament amounted to clear defection.

Following these submissions, the court issued notice to Danam Nagender and sought his explanation within the stipulated period.
