Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court stayed the Ibrahimpatnam Municipal Chairman election on Tuesday after a habeas corpus petition alleged the disappearance of Ward-19 councillor Akula Yadagiri.
Political tension escalated in Ibrahimpatnam Municipality of Rangareddy district after the court intervened in the Ibrahimpatnam Municipal Chairman election. Yadagiri’s son filed the habeas corpus petition, alleging that unidentified persons had kidnapped his father.
Acting on the interim orders, the Election Commission suspended the Ibrahimpatnam Municipal Chairman election process. The court directed police to produce the councillor before it. The order came when the election exercise had almost reached completion.
While the hearing proceeded in court, dramatic developments unfolded inside the municipal council hall. BRS candidate Tekula Sudarshan Reddy reportedly secured the support of 15 councillors and was elected chairman during the voting process. However, officials postponed the vice-chairman election to Friday.
In a sudden turn, councillor Yadagiri appeared at the council hall shortly after voting concluded. Soon after, authorities received the High Court stay order. Consequently, they halted the process minutes before officials could formally announce the chairman’s name.
