GHMC to serve ₹5 breakfast at Indiramma Canteens!

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has approved a plan to serve breakfast at Indiramma Canteens for ₹5, in partnership with the Hare Krishna Movement. The civic body is preparing to roll out the service at 150 locations across the city.

Each breakfast meal, costing ₹19, will be subsidised by GHMC with a ₹14 contribution. Beneficiaries will pay ₹5. Items like idli, upma, pongal, puri, and vada will be served between 7 AM and 10 AM daily.

The project involves upgrading existing Annapurna Canteens. Of the 150 centres, 60 will operate in 10×40 ft structures and 79 in 10×20 ft spaces. An additional 11 locations are being converted into breakfast canteens. Total infrastructure cost is estimated at ₹11.43 crore, with ₹3 crore to be released in the third week of July, ₹4 crore in the first week of August, and the remaining ₹4.43 crore by month-end.

The proposal will be discussed in Thursday’s standing committee meeting. GHMC estimates the annual expenditure for breakfast service at ₹15.33 crore.

Currently, Indiramma Canteens serve lunch for ₹5 in all 150 centres. Each lunch, costing ₹27.50, is subsidised by GHMC by ₹22.50. Meals typically include rice, curry, dal, and pickle. Over 30,000 people avail this service daily.
