GHMC announces mega e-waste cleanliness drive in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: GHMC e-waste drive preparations gathered pace as the civic body began public announcements across Kapra Circle and other circles and wards in the city.

As part of the effort, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation launched awareness campaigns ahead of the Mega E-Waste Cleanliness Drive scheduled for January 12 and 13, 2026. Through these announcements, officials explained the need for safe electronic waste disposal and informed citizens about organised collection points.

Moreover, civic authorities urged residents to hand over discarded electronic items during the drive. These include refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, televisions, computers, laptops, mobile phones, chargers, UPS units, inverters, batteries, and other electronic appliances.

At the same time, officials stressed that organised collection would prevent unsafe dumping. Therefore, they said proper disposal remained essential to protect public health and the environment.

GHMC e-waste drive aims to curb environmental hazards

According to GHMC officials, harmful chemicals from e-waste can seep into soil and groundwater. As a result, such contamination may affect drinking water sources and agricultural land.

In addition, officials warned against burning electronic waste. They said this practice releases toxic fumes and, therefore, causes serious health problems.

Meanwhile, the civic body appealed to households, commercial establishments, and institutions to participate actively in the GHMC e-waste drive. It also asked citizens to avoid dumping electronic waste in public places and to follow scientific disposal rules.

Finally, officials said collective participation would help keep Hyderabad clean, safe, and environmentally responsible. Hence, they urged citizens to treat proper e-waste disposal as a shared civic duty.
