Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Wednesday launched Vanamahotsavam 2025 with a plantation drive at Shirdi Hills Colony in Gajularamaram, Kukatpally Zone, as part of a citywide effort to intensify urban greenery.
GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan and Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi formally inaugurated the campaign, which targets expansion of Hyderabad’s green footprint through high-utility, climate-resilient species.
The civic body aims to exceed previous plantation goals by prioritising species chosen for public benefit and long-term ecological viability. “Inspired by the city’s ‘Green City’ legacy, we aim to exceed plantation targets by focusing on species beneficial to the public,” Karnan said at the event.
Mayor Vijayalakshmi described the Vanamahotsavam initiative as critical to fighting climate change and reinforcing the city’s environmental resilience.
The launch drew participation from Zonal Commissioner Apoorva Chauhan, Additional Commissioner for Urban Biodiversity V. Subhadra Devi, Urban Biodiversity Director Venkateshwar Rao, and other GHMC officials.
