GHMC transfers key powers to zonal, deputy commissioners

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has decided to decentralise key administrative powers to improve civic services. Accordingly, Commissioner R V Karnan transferred important powers to zonal and deputy commissioners.

This decision came after the GHMC area expanded from 650 square kilometres to 2,053 square kilometres. As a result, officials said the move would help deliver faster and more effective services to citizens.

Powers delegated under the GHMC Act

To strengthen decentralised administration, Commissioner Karnan issued official orders delegating powers to zonal and deputy commissioners. He acted under Section 119 of the GHMC Act, 1955.

Under these orders, zonal and deputy commissioners can now handle property tax assessments and revisions. In addition, they can process mutations and exemptions within set limits and conditions.

Because of this delegation, GHMC expects fewer delays in handling public requests. Moreover, officials said quicker decisions would help residents across the expanded GHMC limits.

At the same time, GHMC said the move reflects its focus on transparency and efficient urban governance. The civic body will ensure that officers exercise the powers strictly as per standard procedures and legal rules.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Karnan will regularly review these delegated powers. If needed, he will revise them to meet administrative needs. The orders have come into force with immediate effect.
