Ghmc council chaos erupts during anthem recitals

Hyderabad: The final general body meeting of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) turned chaotic on Tuesday after AIMIM corporators remained seated during the recitals of Vande Mataram and Jaya Jayahe Telangana, prompting an aggressive protest from BJP members.

As the session began, Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi permitted the singing of Vande Mataram to mark its 150th anniversary. However, AIMIM corporators did not stand during the recitals, drawing immediate objections from BJP corporators. Shouting slogans, several BJP members said only those who respected Vande Mataram had the right to live in the country.

The protest quickly escalated. AIMIM members responded with counter-slogans, and both groups began shouting over one another. Several corporators climbed onto tables, and the confrontation intensified inside the council hall. Marshals intervened and physically separated the opposing groups to restore order.

Congress corporators attempted to calm the situation, urging both parties to cooperate and allow the session to proceed. However, disruptions continued for several minutes before the meeting resumed.

Final GHMC session disrupted amid political tension

Tuesday’s meeting was the last general body session of the current GHMC term, which is due to expire in two and a half months. The agenda included 95 questions and 45 items for discussion. Senior leaders including MPs, MLAs, and MLCs were present.

The incident highlighted increasing political tensions within the municipal body ahead of the next civic elections. Despite appeals for decorum, the chamber descended into disorder over ideological and symbolic disputes.
