HMWSSB warns of floodgate opening at Himayatsagar as water levels rise

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has issued a floodgate warning at Himayatsagar reservoir, cautioning all relevant agencies as water levels approach full capacity due to continuous inflows from recent rains.

HMWSSB’s General Manager (Transmission) confirmed the likelihood of opening the floodgates at Himayatsagar if the catchment area rainfall continues. He directed revenue, police, and other departments to activate flood response protocols and alert downstream populations in line with standard operating procedures.

Twin reservoirs record steady rise in inflows after heavy rains

The city has witnessed heavy rainfall over the past week, leading to sustained inflows into Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, both of which serve as drinking water sources for Hyderabad.

As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, Osmansagar reached a level of 1,782 feet—just 8 feet below its full tank level (FTL) of 1,790 feet—with inflows recorded at approximately 50 cusecs.

Meanwhile, Himayatsagar stood at 1,762.35 feet, only a little over one foot below its FTL of 1,763.50 feet. The reservoir saw a sudden inflow of 1,600 cusecs, prompting close monitoring and triggering early warnings.
