Hyderabad: Egg prices surged across the Telugu states as rising exports and lower local supply pushed retail rates beyond ₹8 per egg. Traders said the egg price surge resulted from increased shipments to North India and damage caused by Cyclone Midhili, which disrupted poultry operations. They noted that fitness enthusiasts and regular consumers now face higher costs for a staple item.
Market visitors felt the impact soon after the end of the Karthika month. Retail outlets raised prices quietly, with rates changing according to local demand. Consumers said the spike added pressure at a time when vegetable prices were already high. Wholesale rates also climbed, reaching a record ₹673 for 100 eggs in several markets. Industry members said the trend reflects rising consumption in colder northern states, which created heavy demand for supplies from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Egg prices surge as production drops across regions
Producers reported significant losses due to poultry diseases in both states. As a result, egg output fell sharply. Market groups said these shortages pushed prices higher. They warned that rates may rise further over the next few days if supply remains tight. Authorities turned their focus to sales in Rythu Bazaars to help stabilise prices.
In Visakhapatnam, retailers sold eggs at around ₹6.60 each, while consumers said chicken prices appeared more reasonable than eggs or vegetables. In the wholesale market, 100 eggs cost ₹673, and retail rates range from ₹7 to ₹8. Officials in Chittoor and Hyderabad said wholesale prices stood at ₹635 for 100 eggs. However, retail outlets sold individual eggs at ₹6.50 to ₹7, sparking concern among buyers.
