DCA cracks down on Hyderabad gyms selling steroids and Mephentermine injections

Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) launched a strong enforcement drive against gyms selling banned performance-enhancing drugs. Officials carried out surprise inspections at 20 fitness centres across Hyderabad to identify the illegal sale of anabolic steroids and Mephentermine Sulphate injections. The department said the operation was part of a wider effort to curb misuse of dangerous substances in bodybuilding circles.

DCA Hyderabad gym steroid crackdown targets banned drugs

During the inspections, DCA teams found that several gyms kept prescription medicines without valid documentation or medical supervision. In many cases, trainers encouraged members to use these drugs for rapid muscle gain. Consequently, the DCA warned gym owners to stop selling or storing any prescription medicines meant only for licensed pharmacies.

Moreover, experts explained that prolonged use of anabolic steroids or Mephentermine can cause severe heart strain, organ damage, hormonal imbalance, and even death. Therefore, DCA officials urged fitness enthusiasts to follow safe training methods and avoid illegal shortcuts. In addition, gym-goers were advised to consult certified dieticians before using any supplements.

Legal action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act

The DCA made it clear that it will take strict legal action against those breaking the law. Gyms that violate the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, could face imprisonment for up to five years and heavy fines. Furthermore, enforcement teams have already started tracing suppliers and intermediaries responsible for the illegal supply chain.

DCA Commissioner said the agency will continue random checks to ensure compliance and public safety. Besides enforcement, the department plans to hold awareness drives to educate trainers and youth about the health dangers of drug misuse.

Citizens urged to report illegal drug sales

Meanwhile, the DCA appealed to citizens to play an active role in preventing drug abuse. People can report violations by calling the helpline 1800-599-6969, open between 10:30 AM and 5:00 PM on working days. The agency assured that all callers’ details will remain confidential.

Ultimately, officials said, consistent public awareness, responsible gym management, and continued enforcement together can help Hyderabad stay free from illegal drug practices.
