Hyderabad: BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan wrote an open letter to Rahul Gandhi opposing the proposed hate speech Bill in Telangana and sought his intervention.
He alleged that the Bill contradicts the principles Rahul Gandhi advocated during his nationwide outreach. Therefore, he urged him to step in and stop its implementation.
Sravan described the proposed law as draconian. He said the Bill lacks clear definitions for terms like hatred and intent, which could lead to misuse.
Dasoju Sravan flags concerns over the hate speech Bill
He said the Bill classifies offences as cognisable and non-bailable. As a result, authorities could arrest individuals without a warrant, even for social media posts.
Sravan also raised concerns over provisions allowing officials to remove online content without prior notice. He argued that such powers go against Supreme Court principles.
He questioned why the State adopted a law similar to one earlier rejected elsewhere. In addition, he asked whether such measures align with democratic values.
Sravan referred to Rahul Gandhi’s past stand against controversial laws and sought clarity on his current position. He urged him to ensure the withdrawal of the Bill.
He also criticised the language used in the Assembly and called for safeguarding constitutional values in the State.
