Hyderabad: Cyberabad Traffic Police conducted a weekend drunk driving drive and apprehended 243 offenders across its limits, officials said on Sunday.
During the enforcement campaign, police booked 189 two-wheeler riders, 13 three-wheeler drivers, 40 four-wheeler motorists and one heavy vehicle driver. Authorities stated that all offenders would be produced before the court.
Based on Blood Alcohol Concentration levels, 207 offenders recorded BAC readings between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Meanwhile, 24 offenders showed levels ranging from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml. Another 12 offenders registered levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml.
Officials reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol remained a serious offence. They warned that if an intoxicated driver caused a fatal accident, police would book the accused under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The section prescribes a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.
Courts dispose cases after drunk driving drive enforcement
Police also released data on recent court action linked to the drunk driving drive. Between February 16 and 21, courts disposed of 236 drunk driving cases.
Of these, nine offenders received both a fine and jail sentence. Additionally, six offenders were fined and ordered to perform social service. The remaining 221 offenders were imposed fines only.
Cyberabad Police said they would continue special drives to curb drunk driving and enhance road safety across the region.
