Cyberabad traffic police apprehend 377 for drunk driving

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad traffic police booked 377 individuals during a special weekend enforcement drive against drunk driving. Officials said this on the weekend.

Among the total, Cyberabad traffic police recorded 300 cases involving two-wheelers, 17 three-wheelers, 58 four-wheelers, and two heavy vehicles. Offenders were booked based on their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels. Of these, 317 had BAC levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Another 39 were in the 201–300 mg/100 ml range. Meanwhile, 21 individuals registered BAC readings between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml.

Strict penalties under new criminal code

All offenders will be produced before the court. Police warned that those caught driving under the influence and causing fatal accidents will be prosecuted under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. This law covers culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The maximum penalty under this law is 10 years in prison along with a fine.

Between December 22 and 27, courts disposed of 55 drunk driving cases. One offender received both a fine and a jail term. Five were fined and sentenced to social service. Moreover, 49 were fined.

The Cyberabad traffic police reiterated that drunk driving remains a serious criminal offense with severe consequences under law. Their dedicated efforts aim to curb this menace on the roads.
