Hyderabad: Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dr. M. Ramesh invoked the Preventive Detention (PD) Act against a 36-year-old alleged habitual drug peddler linked to five cases across three states between 2020 and 2026.
The Commissioner ordered the detention of drug peddler Sachin Gangaram Maruti Chavan, a native of Solapur district in Maharashtra. Police classified him as a “Drug Offender” under the preventive detention provisions.
Following the detention order, police lodged Chavan in Central Prison, Cherlapalli, in Medchal district, through Patancheru Police Station. Police said the action aimed to prevent him from continuing activities involving the illegal procurement, transportation and distribution of ganja.
Detention of drug peddler follows five cases across three states
According to Cyberabad Police, Chavan allegedly operated an interstate ganja trafficking network involving Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Investigators said he procured large quantities of ganja from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. He then transported the contraband to different locations for distribution.
Police alleged that Chavan supplied ganja to his associates and drug consumers at high prices to earn illegal profits. He was involved in five drug-peddling cases registered between 2020 and 2026, according to the police statement.
Of these, Telangana police registered three cases, while Maharashtra and Karnataka recorded one case each. Police cited these cases as evidence of his alleged involvement in drug-related activities across state boundaries.
The Commissioner also referred to Chavan’s network of associates involved in procuring, transporting and distributing ganja. According to police, the network extended across Telangana and other states, including areas under the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate.
Cyberabad Commissioner cites public health and order concerns
The detention of drug peddler Sachin Chavan followed an assessment of his alleged repeated involvement in narcotics-related offences. Police said his activities posed a serious threat to public health and adversely affected public order.
The Commissioner considered the alleged interstate network and the five registered cases while ordering preventive detention. Officials said the action sought to prevent further drug-peddling activities involving the procurement and supply of ganja.
The police statement identified Chavan as the son of the late Gangaram Maruti Chavan and a resident of Solapur district, Maharashtra. Following the Commissioner’s order, Patancheru Police Station personnel carried out the detention process.
Authorities subsequently lodged him in Central Prison, Cherlapalli, in Medchal district. The detention of drug peddler Chavan was ordered under the PD Act, based on the grounds cited by the Cyberabad Police Commissioner.
