Hyderabad: Cyberabad Traffic Police booked 273 drunk driving cases during a special weekend enforcement drive conducted across the Cyberabad commissionerate limits.
The drive targeted motorists driving under the influence of alcohol. Police said they apprehended offenders across several locations during the operation.
According to officials, the drunk driving cases included 214 two-wheelers, eight three-wheelers, 49 four-wheelers and two heavy vehicles.
Authorities recorded varying Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels among the offenders during the checks.
Police said 234 offenders had BAC levels ranging between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml.
Another 23 offenders recorded BAC levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml.
Meanwhile, 16 offenders showed BAC levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml during the checks.
Drunk driving cases to be produced in court
Officials said all offenders booked in the drunk driving would be produced before the court.
Cyberabad police reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol was a serious offence. Authorities warned that strict legal action would follow in case of fatal accidents caused by drunk driving.
Police said that if a person drove in an intoxicated condition and caused a fatal accident, authorities would register a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Under Section 105 of the law, offenders could face charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The offence carries a maximum punishment of ten years’ imprisonment along with a fine.
Courts dispose drunk driving cases
Police also released details of drunk driving disposed of in courts during the past week.
Between March 2 and March 7, courts disposed of 132 drunk driving cases.
Among them, eight offenders received both jail terms and fines. Four offenders were fined and ordered to perform social service.
The remaining 120 offenders received fines as punishment.
Police said such enforcement drives would continue to discourage drunk driving and improve road safety.
