Hyderabad: Cyberabad Traffic Police booked 466 motorists during a special weekend drive against drunk driving, with offenders set to face prosecution under stringent legal provisions.
According to officials, the enforcement operation led to the apprehension of 344 two-wheeler riders, 15 three-wheeler drivers, 104 car drivers, and three heavy vehicle operators. The majority of cases involved motorists with blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml.
A further breakdown showed that:
- 415 offenders had BAC levels between 35–200 mg/100 ml
- 31 offenders recorded BAC levels between 201–300 mg/100 ml
- 20 offenders were found with BAC levels between 301–550 mg/100 ml
All violators will be produced before the appropriate court for legal proceedings.
Police reiterated that driving under the influence is a criminal offence with grave consequences. Under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, those causing fatal accidents while intoxicated may be charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder — carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine.
In a related update, courts disposed of 336 drunk driving cases during the previous week (October 27 to November 1). Among those:
- 285 individuals were fined
- 32 received both fines and social service penalties
- 19 were sentenced to both fines and jail terms
Cyberabad Traffic Police warned that similar enforcement drives would continue to ensure road safety and deter dangerous driving behaviour.
