Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Traffic Police caught 426 persons during a special drunk driving check conducted on Saturday. This was part of an intensified enforcement drive. The operation targeted different categories of vehicles. Offenders now face court proceedings.
Of the total caught, 323 were two-wheeler riders, 17 were driving three-wheelers, 85 were in four-wheelers, and one operated a heavy vehicle. The offenders were categorised based on their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels.
High BAC levels lead to court action
According to officials, 368 drivers had BAC levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Another 43 offenders recorded BAC levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml. Meanwhile, 15 individuals had extremely high readings of up to 550 mg/100 ml. All offenders will be produced before the court.
The Cyberabad Police reiterated that drunk driving is a serious crime. They warned that if a person drives in an inebriated state and causes a fatal accident, they will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. This is for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The section carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a fine.
In the past week, 410 previous drunk driving cases were resolved in court. Of these, 41 offenders received both fines and jail sentences. Moreover, 21 were sentenced to fines and social service. Additionally, 348 were penalised with fines only.
