Hyderabad: A slight uptick in COVID-19 cases across Telangana has drawn attention this week, but health officials insist there’s no cause for anxiety. The infections, traced to the JN.1 subvariant, are reportedly mild and well within manageable limits.
Dr Rajakumari, Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, said the current cases aren’t showing signs of severity, and most people testing positive are recovering at home without complications. In an interview with a Telugu news channel, she emphasised that widespread immunity from earlier waves and vaccines has provided a strong buffer, sharply reducing the risk of serious illness.
While the hospital hasn’t been re-designated as a COVID nodal centre, precautionary steps are already in motion. Hospital staff of all departments have been placed on alert. The supplies have been checked, and emergency systems have been put in place in case the number of cases increases.
Gandhi Hospital is also operating as a referral testing lab. It is receiving samples from various districts. But as of now, no formal advisories have been issued by the state health department.
On the public health front, Dr Rajakumari urged citizens to remain cautious without resorting to fear. People with minor symptoms — cold, cough, or mild fever — are advised to isolate at home and consult a doctor if the condition persists. Masks are recommended in crowded settings, and she reiterated the importance of respiratory etiquette.
Hospital visits, she noted, are only necessary for patients experiencing breathlessness or a drop in oxygen levels — both of which are uncommon at this stage. Testing will be carried out based on medical assessment rather than blanket screening.
