HYDERABAD, February 5: The Congress Party has issued a show-cause notice to its Member of Legislative Council (MLC), Teenmar Mallanna, following his public criticism of the caste census survey and the burning of the survey form. The party’s Disciplinary Committee has requested Mallanna to provide an explanation for his actions, which included using objectionable language against the caste census.
The Congress government recently presented details of the caste census report in both the Legislative Assembly and Council. However, Mallanna’s public denouncement of the survey has led to increased scepticism among the public, particularly within Backward Classes (BC) communities.
During Assembly discussions, Mallanna’s remarks were highlighted by Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) to challenge the government’s stance. Mallanna also questioned the caste census figures in the Legislative Council. In response, the Congress leadership has taken his comments seriously, initiating disciplinary procedures by issuing the show-cause notice.
Beyond questioning the caste census, Mallanna has recently organised a series of BC meetings, during which he has been critical of the Reddy community and fellow party leaders from that group. Notably, at a BC gathering in Warangal, he made contentious remarks about the Reddy community, leading to public objections and police complaints.
These developments have intensified calls within the party for Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to take action against Mallanna. Several ministers and party legislators have expressed their disapproval of his conduct. The combination of his criticism of the caste census and his comments about the Reddy community has heightened tensions within the Congress leadership, culminating in the issuance of the show-cause notice.
Should Mallanna’s response fail to satisfy the Disciplinary Committee, further action against him is anticipated.
