Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy laid the foundation stone for the Omkareshwara Swamy temple at Manchirevula under the Musi project. The Musi project aims to restore the river and develop it into a major spiritual and tourism corridor.
The ceremony took place at Machileshwara Veerabhadra Swamy temple premises in Gandipet mandal of Rangareddy district. Earlier, the Chief Minister offered prayers at the Veerabhadra temple along with his family.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and ministers, including Vem Narender Reddy, attended the programme. Moreover, officials from the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation were present.
Musi project integrates river revival with temple development
Officials said the corporation has finalised designs for the temple complex. In addition, the project proposes construction across eight acres near the historic Veerabhadra Swamy temple.
The government plans to build the temple at an estimated cost of ₹700 crore. The design includes a 100-foot gopuram and a 100-foot statue of Lord Shiva on an island in the Musi river.
Addressing the gathering, Revanth Reddy said Musi rejuvenation is essential for Hyderabad’s future. He warned that the city could face pollution levels similar to Delhi if authorities delay action.
He said the temple construction is part of a larger vision to transform the Musi riverfront. Meanwhile, he noted the historical significance of the river and stressed better utilisation of water resources.
The Chief Minister said the government aims to prevent river pollution and ensure sustainable water flow. Furthermore, he announced plans to divert Godavari waters into the Musi to maintain continuous flow.
He said the project will promote communal harmony by developing religious sites across communities. In addition, he stated that a church in Uppal-Nagole and a mosque in Puranapul are part of the broader plan.
Revanth Reddy said pollution in the Musi has affected downstream regions, including parts of the erstwhile Nalgonda district. Consequently, he said the government initiated the project to address health concerns.
He alleged that some groups are attempting to stall the project through legal challenges. However, he said the government will proceed with the Musi project despite obstacles.
