HYDERABAD: A devastating fire broke out at a nursing home in China, claiming the lives of 20 people. The incident occurred on Tuesday night in Hebei province, sparking panic and drawing emergency response teams to the scene.
According to Chinese media reports, the fire erupted at around 9 p.m. local time on Tuesday at a nursing home located in Longhua County, Chengde city, approximately 180 kilometres from the capital, Beijing. The blaze spread rapidly, resulting in the deaths of 20 residents who were trapped inside. Firefighters rushed to the location and were able to bring the flames under control.
By 3 a.m. on Wednesday, local media confirmed that 20 people had died in the fire, while more than 15 others sustained serious injuries. Rescue teams responded swiftly, transporting the injured to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Officials indicated that the death toll could rise further given the severity of the incident.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine what triggered the deadly blaze. Although firefighters managed to douse the flames, significant damage had already occurred by the time emergency crews arrived.
The tragedy has raised concerns about fire safety standards in elderly care facilities across the country.
