CCI closes Kapas Kisan app after completion of cotton procurement in Telangana

Hyderabad: The Cotton Corporation of India has closed the Kapas Kisan app in Telangana after completing the cotton procurement process for the current season, officials said on Tuesday.

The Kapas Kisan app became available in the State from October 21, 2025. Since then, CCI procured 15.60 lakh metric tonnes of cotton across Telangana. Officials said the total value of procurement stood at ₹12,313 crore.

According to CCI data, as many as 8.39 lakh farmers sold cotton at 336 procurement centres established across the State. The corporation credited ₹10,673 crore directly into farmers’ bank accounts for cotton purchases.

During the season, farmers cultivated cotton over 45.32 lakh acres in Telangana. The government estimated total production at 28.29 lakh metric tonnes. Officials said CCI fixed the minimum support price at ₹8,110 per quintal and limited procurement to seven quintals per farmer.

Cotton procurement in Telangana sees district-wise variation

Officials said farmers producing higher quantities of cotton had to secure verification from local agricultural extension officers before procurement staff conducted weighment. However, in some districts, brokers exploited farmers who struggled with app-based slot booking.

According to officials, brokers falsely promised to book slots on behalf of farmers and purchased cotton at prices up to ₹1,200 below the MSP. Following complaints, vigilance officials stepped in and prevented brokers from selling cotton at government procurement centres.

Despite this, officials estimated that private traders may have purchased nearly 3.50 lakh metric tonnes of cotton. With procurement now closed, authorities advised farmers holding leftover stock to sell it to private traders.

In terms of production, Adilabad district topped the State with 1.40 lakh metric tonnes of cotton. Nalgonda followed with 1.38 lakh metric tonnes, while Warangal recorded 1.21 lakh metric tonnes. Kumurambheem Asifabad produced 1.20 lakh metric tonnes, Sangareddy 1.01 lakh metric tonnes, Vikarabad and Nagarkurnool 84,000 tonnes each, Rangareddy 76,000 tonnes, Siddipet 73,000 tonnes, Jangaon 66,000 tonnes, and Yadadri Bhongir 65,000 tonnes.

Officials said Jagtial recorded the lowest procurement at 1,525 tonnes, while Medak accounted for 4,423 tonnes.

Kapas Kisan app issues affect farmers

Officials acknowledged that farmers faced difficulties due to new rules introduced this season. Slot booking through the Kapas Kisan app reportedly took seven to ten days, causing delays for genuine farmers.

They said brokers managed to secure slots more easily, while many farmers failed to get appointments at procurement centres. In addition, the seven-quintal cap per acre discouraged farmers from approaching CCI centres.

As a result, officials said many farmers turned to private traders. Taking advantage of the situation, brokers allegedly exploited farmers by offering lower prices, they added.
