Ottawa, January 7: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday evening, stepping down both as the country’s leader and the head of his political party. Before resigning, Trudeau addressed the nation, expressing his belief that he might not be the best choice to lead his party in the next elections.
“If I have to fight battles at home, I may not be the best option for the upcoming elections,” Trudeau said during his address. Referring to himself as a “fighter,” he added, “I deeply care about the Canadian people and will always work for their welfare.”
According to reports, Trudeau will continue to serve as Prime Minister until his successor is chosen. His government’s current term was set to end in October, but his resignation has raised the likelihood of early elections.
Trudeau has been in office since November 2015, leading Canada for nearly a decade. His decision marks a significant shift in Canadian politics, with the focus now on the selection of his successor and the country’s future leadership.
