Babli Project water release to Telangana as per Supreme Court order

Hyderabad: Authorities released water from the Babli Project to Telangana on Sunday morning, following the Supreme Court’s March 1 directive to lift the gates and discharge water downstream.

Irrigation officials from Maharashtra and Telangana jointly released 0.60 tmc ft of water from the Babli Project, built on the Godavari River in Maharashtra. They acted in line with the apex court’s orders to prevent drinking water scarcity during the summer.

Every year, the Supreme Court directs officials to open the Babli gates at the beginning of March to ensure adequate downstream flow. Accordingly, they raised the gates and allowed water to flow into the lower reaches of the Godavari River.

The discharged water will reach the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP). Officials from the SRSP, the Maharashtra Irrigation Department, the Telangana Irrigation Department, and the Central Water Commission attended the release.

They supervised the gate-lifting and monitored the discharge to ensure compliance with the court’s guidelines. The coordinated exercise aims to meet seasonal water needs and maintain regulated sharing between the two states.
