Hyderabad: Mild tension prevailed near the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Saturday when police took several auto drivers into custody. The drivers attempted to stage a protest outside the Assembly premises following a Chalo Assembly call.
The auto drivers said they planned the protest to highlight their financial difficulties. They demanded that the government fulfil promises made during the elections. According to them, their income declined after the Congress government introduced free bus travel for women.
Auto drivers raise demand over pending assurances
The auto drivers said the government promised ₹11,000 per year to each driver. However, they alleged that the amount was not released even after two years. They also said the government failed to implement other assurances given to the auto sector.
Following the protest attempt, police detained several drivers and shifted them in police vehicles to different police stations. As a result, authorities strengthened security arrangements around the Assembly.
The situation remained under control, though tension persisted in the area for some time due to the detentions.
