Hyderabad: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the National Turmeric Board office in Nizamabad on Sunday, officials said. The office is being set up at the district headquarters after years of demand from turmeric farmers across the undivided districts of Nizamabad, Adilabad, and Karimnagar.
Shah is also scheduled to address a farmers’ meeting at the local government polytechnic college and later attend the unveiling of former minister D. Srinivas’s statue at the Kanteshwar junction.
In preparation for the Union Minister’s visit, authorities arranged a helipad on the Collectorate premises and tightened security across the city.
Farmers in the region have been seeking a National Turmeric Board along with a minimum support price of ₹15,000 per quintal. During the 2019 parliamentary polls, as many as 176 farmers filed nominations as candidates in protest, drawing national attention.
The Centre had then assured the board’s establishment, and is now executing the plan. After Erode in Tamil Nadu and Sangli in Maharashtra, Nizamabad will become the third location to host the National Turmeric Board.
The three districts together produce around eight lakh quintals of turmeric annually. Officials say the board will enable direct procurement by national agencies, improving access to international markets and ensuring support prices for local farmers.
