Akbaruddin Owaisi cautions against harming poor in Musi rejuvenation drive

Hyderabad: AIMIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi on Friday warned that the Musi rejuvenation project should not destroy the livelihoods of poor families living along the river.

Speaking during the debate on the second day of the Telangana Assembly session, Owaisi questioned the government on the project’s exact limits. He asked whether Musi rejuvenation would begin from Vikarabad or from a midpoint. He also demanded clarity on plans up to Gandipet.

Owaisi sought details on the catchment areas of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar. He said the Musi ranked eighth in the world for pollution, highlighting the seriousness of the problem.

Musi rejuvenation must address sewage flow: Akbaruddin Owaisi

Criticising the current situation, Owaisi said Musi and Esa no longer functioned as rivers. Instead, he said, they had turned into sewage channels. He added that most of the city’s sewage flowed directly into the Musi.

He also said sewage water was entering the Gandipet reservoir. Owaisi urged the government to desilt Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, which were built decades ago.

According to him, increasing storage capacity would help divert Godavari water in the future. He further questioned the status of the pedestrian project near Charminar. He said the work began three years ago but showed no visible progress.

Owaisi asked the government to make Musi rejuvenation plans and timelines public. He stressed that development should not come at the cost of displacement or hardship for the poor.
