5 kg gas cylinder rollout expands access for urban users

Hyderabad: Oil marketing companies rolled out the 5 kg gas cylinder across India, allowing consumers to buy cooking fuel without submitting address proof and with minimal paperwork.

The decision followed recent disruptions to gas supply, prompting companies to introduce a smaller, more accessible option. The 5 kg gas cylinder aims to serve students, working professionals, and migrant workers who often face challenges in obtaining standard LPG connections.

Earlier, consumers relied on 14.2 kg domestic cylinders or 19 kg commercial cylinders. However, the new category offers flexibility for those living in rented accommodation or temporary setups. Consumers can now purchase the cylinder instantly from nearby agencies by showing any valid identity proof.

5 kg gas cylinder availability and delivery options

Indian Oil Corporation launched its 5 kg cylinder under the “Chhotu” brand. It is available at petrol pumps, kirana stores, supermarkets, and Indane distributors. Users can carry and use the cylinder in any city, making it suitable for frequent movers.

Bharat Gas introduced a similar mini cylinder with doorstep delivery. Customers can call 1800224344 and receive the cylinder within two hours, although a delivery charge of ₹25 applies. Meanwhile, HP Gas launched its 5 kg cylinder under the “Appu” name, available at fuel stations, retail outlets, and local shops.

Refilling the smaller cylinder is also easier. Instead of booking in advance and waiting for delivery, users can visit nearby outlets and get it refilled quickly.

The rollout marks a shift toward more flexible LPG access, especially for users who require portable and short-term cooking solutions.
