34 arrested in communal violence case in Malda’s Motabari

KOLKATA: In connection with the communal violence that occurred on 26 March in Motabari, Malda district of West Bengal, 34 miscreants have been arrested. Following the incident, internet services in the area remain suspended. Three companies of Armed Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) have been deployed to maintain law and order.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday had asked the District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP) to submit an action-taken report by 3 April regarding the violence. The court emphasized that the state must act with caution and take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of those affected by the violence.

According to reports, on 26 March, a prayer was being held at a mosque in Motabari when a procession passed nearby. During this time, some individuals allegedly raised religious slogans. On 27 March, members of another community protested against this incident. During the protest, a mob vandalised shops, homes, and vehicles, and looted property. To control the situation, police used baton charge and fired tear gas shells.

Local residents stated that during the protest on 27 March, some people carried religious flags and raised slogans. The protest turned violent as rioters began damaging property, looting shops and homes, and setting fire to parked vehicles.

Malda police have appealed to the public to maintain peace and not pay attention to any rumours or misinformation circulating on social media. Authorities suspect that some individuals are deliberately trying to incite violence. Citizens have been urged to inform police immediately if they encounter any suspicious activity or false information.
