Hyderabad: A woman attempted self-immolation at the State Human Rights Commission office in Nampally on Tuesday, alleging harassment by police.
The woman, identified as Shravani from Kavadiguda, took the step claiming she could no longer bear the alleged harassment by Gandhi Nagar police. As a result, tension prevailed at the commission office for a brief period.
She poured petrol on herself in front of the office and tried to set herself ablaze. However, police personnel present at the spot reacted swiftly and intervened.
Self-immolation bid at SHRC office triggers tension
Police immediately snatched the petrol bottle from her and prevented the attempt. Consequently, they averted a major tragedy at the location.
They shifted the woman to a police station for further questioning. Meanwhile, authorities began an inquiry into the allegations made by her.
Officials said they would examine the circumstances leading to the incident.
