Illegal gender test leads to woman’s death after abortion in Telangana

Hyderabad: A woman from Suryapet district died following a botched abortion, allegedly triggered by an illegal prenatal gender test carried out at a private residence in Nakrekal, Nalgonda district.

According to police, a man identified as Yadagiri had installed an ultrasound machine at his home and conducted unauthorised gender determination tests. Two days prior to the incident, he reportedly informed a woman named Anusha, a resident of Mote village in Suryapet, that she was pregnant with a female child.

Based on this information, Anusha underwent an abortion at a private hospital in Suryapet, where she suffered excessive bleeding during the procedure and died as a result. Following the incident, Yadagiri is said to have absconded.

Authorities are investigating the case and are in the process of tracking down the suspect. The illegal practice of gender testing and selective abortion is a serious offence under Indian law, aimed at curbing the declining female sex ratio.
